This is a powerful skills training course that gives you the confidence to engage with someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis.

The ASIST training courses are extremely well received by men at Tables. Check out what men previously had to say about it here.

We urge you to join us in acquiring these skills. And the skills are not just for your Men's Table. These are life skills that you carry with you everywhere. That is why you might also consider speaking to your employer about doing this training within your work week without need to take time off.. you will be bringing the skills back to your workplace as wel

ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Over 1,000,000 people have taken the workshop, and studies have proven that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk. Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, virtually anyone age 16 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, can become an ASIST-trained caregiver.

In setting up Men's Tables, Ben and David, Co-Founders, were asked by men early on, 'What do we do if a man at our Table is experiencing a significant mental health crisis?"

We went looking for the best possible skills training for Suicide Intervention Training and found it in the ASIST Training. Attending the 2-day training is incredibly powerful and practical, and you come away with confidence that you would be able to help someone in a time of need. ASIST provides a set of life-skills that are extremely valuable; it is perhaps the most important training you might ever do.

Workshop features:
  • Presentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered trainers
  • A scientifically proven intervention model
  • Powerful audiovisual learning aids
  • Group discussions
  • Skills practice and development
  • A balance of challenge and safety

ASIST has saved and changed hundreds of thousands of lives around the world

The ASIST workshop is divided into five sections that follow in a logical progression to gradually build comfort and understanding around suicide and suicide intervention.

Preparing: Sets the tone, norms, and expectations of the learning experience.
Connecting: Sensitises participants to their own attitudes towards suicide. Creates an understanding of the impact that attitudes can have on the intervention process.
Understanding: Overviews the intervention needs of a person at risk. It focuses on providing participants with the knowledge and skills to recognise risk and develop safe plans to reduce the risk of suicide.
Assisting: Presents a model for effective suicide intervention. Participants develop their skills through observation and supervised simulation experiences in large and small groups.
Networking: Generates information about resources in the local community. Promotes a commitment by participants to transform local resources into helping networks.
