The Music of a Jazz Revolutionary! – an Ornette Coleman Ancestor Celebration
Event description
Ten years ago, the world lost a jazz icon, a pioneer who forever changed the path of the music; But his spirit lives in every note, every solo, of every artist he's ever inspired.
On October 17th step into the harmolodic universe of Ornette Coleman at The Back Room for an unforgettable evening of bold, boundary-pushing music. Led by the incomparable Dr. Nora Free (whose 2015 dissertation on Coleman's work cemented her as a leading voice in the study of his music) this tribute brings together some of the Bay Area’s most fearless experimental improvisors.
Experience some of Coleman's iconic masterpieces alongside rarely performed, lesser-known works, brought to life in an intimate, immersive setting. Between selections, Dr. Free will discuss Ornette’s ever-evolving sound, radical musical philosophy, and the profound cultural impact of his work in the late 20th century.
Featuring:
Dr. Nora Free – alto saxophone
David Boyce – tenor & soprano saxophones
David El – guitar
Kevin Goldberg – bass
Shawn Myers – drums
