Haydn String Quartet in G Major, Op.77 No.1

Commissioned in 1799 by Prince Joseph Lobkowitz - who would soon become a major patron of Beethoven - this piece belongs to Haydn’s final completed set of quartets. Known as the Komplementsquartett, it reflects a master composer aware of the emerging Romantic era while remaining grounded in Classical architecture.

Schubert String Quintet in C Major, D.956

Completed in September 1828 - just two months before Schubert's death at age 31 - this work was never performed during his lifetime and remained unpublished for nearly a quarter of a century until its premier in 1850. Schubert opted for adding a second cello instead of a second viola (the convention established by Mozart and Boccherini). This shifts the ensemble's balance allowing one cello to provided a grounded baseline while the other sings in its vocal, tenor register.
