Event description

With so many young people leading projects in their communities, the Next Gen Awards were created as an opportunity to showcase our next generation of young innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders across the country. Over the duration of our shortlisting process, our panel of judges have finalised the Western Australian applicants who have demonstrated outstanding innovations, 21st-century skills, leadership, and education in their local communities. The Next Gen Western Australian Showcase Event will be an evening to recognise and celebrate these individuals.

The Next Gen Awards 2023 saw over 40 young changemakers and innovative educators from across Western Australia nominating and after a rigorous judging process, three finalists have been announced for four award categories. Join us in person or online for our Western Australia Showcase Event to hear from each of our finalists as they share the impactful projects they're leading in their school communities, before we announce our Next Gen West Australian winners for 2023!

The evening is open to attend for the broader community and will feature plenty of networking opportunities, inspirational guest speakers, and many opportunities to connect and collaborate with like-minded young innovators!

Featured Keynote Speakers:

The Journey To Success | Jeremy Chetty, Student Edge | Jeremy is the Co-Founder of Student Edge, Australia’s largest student membership with 1.3M members. He went from student to entrepreneur, starting and building a business over the last 20 years and sharing his story of an “overnight” success. A passionate champion for young people and the startup ecosystem, Jeremy is a sought-after speaker, coach and entrepreneur in residence at Murdoch University, Spacecubed & Stephen Michael Foundation.

(un)Learning: What Got You Here Won’t Get You There | Dr Jo Hawkins, The University Of Western Australia | In a fast-changing world, approaches that brought you success in the past, might not work so well in the future. Unlearning is learning to think and behave differently, when there are already beliefs, behaviours, or assumptions in place (that get in the way).  Jo will argue that for today’s young people, the ability to “unlearn” will be just as important as the ability to learn! She will share real-life stories of how the process of learning, unlearning, and relearning led to success. She will also discuss how skills related to innovation and entrepreneurship can help us challenge entrenched ways of thinking and develop new ways of working together.

Master Of Ceremonies:

Scott Millar | The tech-head prodigy behind BOP Industries, Scott Millar is a young entrepreneur taking the world by storm. Compared to a young Steve Jobs after turning a year nine business project into a thriving business, Scott is a 23-year-old CEO that has taken an alternative career pathway, turning down scholarship offers after finishing high school to run his company full time, now with a growing presence around the world. As Queensland’s Young Small Business Leader and one of Australia’s top 30 CEO’s under 30 years of age Scott is on a mission to inspire the next generation, showing them the exciting things they can do regardless of their age, postcode or skillset.
