Event description

The next step on your poetic journey: with Jennifer Compton

No matter where you are on your poetic journey there is always the next step. Let's get together and sort out what the next step might be for you and your work.

- Is it – How do I get my work published, where should I send it?
- Is it – How do I get my work across to an audience at readings?
- Is it – How do I get my spoken word into a form that is acceptable to editors.
- Is it – How do I find the inspiration to do that final draft that lifts my work onto the next level.
- Is it – How do I get my sixth book of poetry noticed by the judges of national prizes?

There are so many questions. Let's get together and question everything!

Each participant is asked to please bring 1 or 2 or 3 poems along to the workshop.

Jennifer Compton lives in Melbourne. Recent Work Press published her 11 th book of poetry - the moment, taken – in 2021. Her third book, Blue, was shortlisted for the Kenneth Slessor Prize For Poetry; her sixth book, Barefoot, was shortlisted for the John Bray Poetry Award; her seventh book, This City, won the Kathleen Grattan Award; her tenth book, Mr Clean & The Junkie, was longlisted for the Ockham NZ Book Awards. In 2013 her poem, Now You Shall Know, won the Newcastle Poetry Prize. She very much appreciates being given the big cheque but she also relishes the hourly burly of the open mic and is an avid performer. So she was delighted to be included in the recent UQP anthology of Spoken Word, Solid Air. And delighted in equal measure to have had work selected for The Best Australian Poetry in 2003 and 2009, and for The Best Australian Poems in 2004 2005 2008 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 and 2017.
