'Number talks are the perfect start to any maths class. They are like no other teaching method I know. Many important maths activities require a lot of planning and an hour of teaching time, but Number Talks are different. In a very short span of time, teachers can provide students with some of the greatest opportunities - they can:

change their view of mathematics
teach them number sense
help them develop mental maths skills, and, at the same time,
engage them in creative, open mathematics.'

This event is for:

Primary classroom educators who are:

new to number talks and want to learn more
think they are using number talks but aren't sure because of all the variations around!
already using number talks and want to refine their practice

Together we will:

distinguish the classic number talk from other talk routines involving number
observe number talks that focus on addition, in action
consider what makes an addition strategy 'efficient'
reflect on teacher moves and how they may help and hinder learning in number talks

Alex Box, Primary Educator, Education Researcher and Project Manager at mathsplay.org.

Alex identifies as a 'formerly maths-anxious student and teacher' and is passionate about sharing teaching approaches that not only transformed her teaching, but her own relationship with mathematics. She is the founder of Maths Play, a global education research project working to better understand play, and leverage these understandings to create positive maths experiences for learners. She works collaboratively with teachers via a school pilot program, mentors pre-service and graduate teachers, and works with various organisations and schools.
