Event description

This Astro-Update will highlight the amazing observations made with the James Webb Space Telescope, Chandra Xray Telescope, Alma Microwave Telescope and other great observatories. This presentation is a celebration of the progress we have made towards understanding our universe through some of the most sophisticated instrumentation created by the scientific community.

The James Webb Telescope has the remarkable capability to record young stars in our early universe as they appeared 13.4 billion years ago, right through to young stars in our local universe. This amazing depth of vision enables a wonderful exploration of the stellar formation process throughout the life of the universe, and everything that derives from it. Complemented by other observatories we are starting to make inroads into answering the big questions about the nature of the early universe, the evolution of stars, and the chemistry of distance worlds. Our understanding of the elusive dark matter is also continuing to be refined by new observations from these telescopes. These topics, and more, will be explored throughout the evening's presentation.

Presented by Dr Paul Payne, with over 35 years experience in communicating astronomy and physics to the general public. The presentation will be in stereoscopic, interactive 3D. Powerful visualisations will aid in explaining all the concepts that are explored during the evening.

The evening will also be complemented with refreshments, and viewings through a telescope of the night sky, weather permitting.
