Event description

The Play

The Peach Season is a twenty first century Australian play about perennial human themes, ranging from the glories of young love and the frustrations of adolescence the agonies of motherly devotion.

It is the best season for five years at Celia's farm and the fruit is rotting on the branches for want of pickers. Kieren and Sheena , escaping a difficult past, turn up from nowhere to save the day but before season's end, tragedy will strike and many life lessons will have been learned.

Award winning Sydney dramatist, TV scriptwriter and novelist, Debra Oswald tells the story with trademark warmth and humour. The Sydney Morning Herald critic reported:

"The Peach Season is about the redemption of damaged souls .... It combines deadpan humour, emotional truths and gusto. The virtue of Oswald's funny and tender play is that it is deeply caring of people. irrespective of the mess they create or get themselves into."

The Venue

The Blackheath Community Centre's Phillips Hall offers many charming reminders of Australian mid twentieth century rural culture. Blackheath Theatre Company's brand new thrust stage seating format, however, has introduced an exciting new experience for Blue Mountains Theatre goers. 84 seats makes for an intimate arena style atmosphere. No audience member is more than 5 metres from the stage and progressive seating ensures a comfortable unimpeded view for everyone present. Generous aisles, well placed railings and ample wheelchair spaces ensure convenience and safety for a diverse variety of patrons.

Blackheath Theatre Company

Excellence in the performing art and opportunities for members to grow their skills represent the two overarching imperatives of this young community based theatre company. While the COVID pandemic has understandably curtailed many of its activities through 2020 and 2021, the future looks promising with a full program of performances for 2022, along with a varied season of acting, voice and movement workshops for members and other attendees.
