The Pennsylvania Railroad Shops and the Columbus Panhandles
Description
Join us in the auditorium room in the Main branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, 96 South Grant Avenue, at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 9, when the Columbus Historical Society looks at the Panhandle shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad, once one of the city’s largest employers, and the famous Columbus Panhandles football team. The Panhandles started as a shop team and became one of the founding members of the National Football League. CHS board member and former Columbus Dispatch business editor Christopher Amatos will give a presentation on the shops and fellow CHS board member and former Dispatch sports columnist Bob Hunter will give a presentation on the team and the six famous Nesser brothers, who regularly played for it. CHS board member Bruce Warner, a former employee of the New York Central Railroad, will talk briefly about railroads in Columbus, and Michelle Memmer Artim, Nesser football historian and great granddaughter of Al Nesser, will also speak briefly on her campaign to have the Nesser brothers inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The program is free and open to the public, but a reservation is requested to reserve your spot. Reservations may be made at CHS website at columbushistory.org. or on the Columbus Historical Society’s Facebook page.
