The People's Laneways of Glen Eira - Jane's Walk Melbourne
Event description
Background
Glen Eira is a Council area south-east of Melbourne CBD. It has an array of 'old night cart lanes' in it's residential areas; that is, the laneways were originally used for collecting human waste behind houses. However, today these uses have become defunct. Since 2017, community members of Glen Eira have come together to create new uses within these old laneways- by revitalising them with gardens and art to be enjoyed by the public. Something I think Jane Jacobs would have advocated for- community creating their own sense of place.
Join me in exploring the charm of these unassuming old laneways in Glen Huntly and Carnegie. Along this route, there will also be a couple of 'geocaches' to stop and discover- another form of community bringing diverse uses to public spaces. Maybe even bring a pre-loved book to swap in one of the many street libraries.
This event is run by Elliott Barrington. He is currently a Masters Urban Planning student at RMIT :)
Access Info
This walk will start out the front of Glen Huntly Station - on the Glen Huntly Rd and Royal Ave corner. Glen Huntly Station is on the Frankston line. Tram Route 67 also stops out the front and along various points of our walk. There are also various car parks around the station.
Note, this walk is not planned as a loop and will finish closer to Carnegie station on the East Pakenham/ Cranbourne line.
ALSO NOTE- On this weekend, buses are currently planned to replace trains on the Frankston line from the City to Caulfield. Not to fret! Catch any outbound East Pakenham or Cranbourne train in the city loop and interchange at Caulfield Station towards Frankston (just one more stop down). Have a difficult experience interchanging at Caulfield? Know that you're not the only one and sign this Petition to make Caulfield Station Accessible.Â
Unfortunately, due to cobblestone paths along many of the laneways, this walk may not be fully accessible for wheelchair access. :(Â
