A crash course in presentation skills for authors, and how to use them to entertain and inform an audience of adults or children.

Like it or not, public appearances are an essential part of every author’s life. Whether it’s reading from our work, talking to an audience or pitching to publishers, we need to be entertaining, informative and confident (or at least appear so!). This workshop will address both delivery and content, and help you find the style of presentation that best suits you. There will be opportunities to practise your delivery in a safe setting, and get feedback.

Learning outcomes

Through examples, practical exercises and group discussion, we'll cover a range of topics including:

Simple, effective performance skills that reduce anxiety and increase the impact of what you say.
Your responsibilities to your audience and to the venue.
How to vary your presentation to keep your audience’s attention.
Developing a range of ideas for your own presentation.
The importance of rehearsal.

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on industry; it will be held in-person at Queensland Writers Centre, State Library of Queensland. As a Level 1 workshop, it is suitable for all writers.

About Lian

Lian Tanner is the author of thirteen children’s novels and one picture book. Her Keepers trilogy won two Aurealis Awards for Best Australian Children's Fantasy and has been translated into eleven languages.
