Australia's ability to secure a timely, fair and just transition to renewables will pivot on the social and community aspects of the transition. We're exploring the best ways to genuinely engage communities in the transition and how social licence will play a central role.

ANU I2S’ research shows that technical capacity and engineering account for 10% or less of the most impactful reasons for project delays in Australia but stakeholder and community pressure is consistently ranked among the top three factors contributing to project delays or cancellations. The Australian Energy Industry Commissioner’s very recent Community Engagement Review found that 92% of respondents surveyed were dissatisfied with the extent to which project developers engaged the local community. Farmers for Climate Action found that less than one-quarter of farmers surveyed are currently willing to host transmission on their properties. Our own research also shows that technical capacity and engineering account for 10% or less of the most impactful reasons for project delays in Australia but stakeholder and community pressure is consistently ranked among the top three factors contributing to project delays or cancellations.
