Description

Working for social and environmental change? Struggling to remain positive given the state of the world? Even though you and those you work with are making some progress?

You’re not alone. And the challenges we face, individually and collectively, are very real. Eco-anxiety, even fear, is understandable. But it saps our purpose and our strength:

  • We start to doubt ourselves;

  • We lose direction and focus;

  • We find it more difficult to engage and inspire others.

A major driver of eco-anxiety is uncertainty. Not just uncertainty about how the climate, nature and political crises will unfold, we also don’t know how effective our interventions will be, nor how much of a difference our work is really making.

What if we stop carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders? What if we refuse to let uncertainty grind us down, and jujitsu-like, turn uncertainty into positive energy?

Join us for a workshop where gentle facilitation meets joyful improv and discover how to accept uncertainty and tap into your purpose, drive and creativity, so you can move forward with greater confidence in yourself and in those you work with.

You will also:

  • Experience activities and an approach you could bring into your own work;

  • Develop skills including listening, trust building and co-creation;

  • Re-connect with your inner compass, nurturing hope and courage.

Plus, come for the fun because there’s not enough of that around right now.

FAQs

  • Who is this workshop for?

    If you're leading or working on social and environmental change, are hungry for genuine hope and meaningful action, this workshop is for you – whether you work in business, the public sector, NGOs or with communities.

  • What’s improv got to do with sustainability?

    I’ve been working in sustainability for 30 years. When I started studying and performing improv two years ago I was blown away by how closely the principles of improv aligned with the skills and approaches needed for sustainability leadership. Not just working with uncertainty, but also building trust, deep listening and much more.

    The big difference is that improv is playful and joyful, while sustainability is often weighed down by its importance and seriousness.

    I believe that applying improv techniques, and some of this joy and playfulness, can make us more effective as sustainability leaders and change makers.

  • What should you expect?

    This is a participative workshop, with paired conversations, group discussions, and gentle physical activity and movement.

    Together we will create a supportive space for each other. You will never be put on the spot – no role play, no acting, no spotlights.

  • What to wear?

    We'll be standing and moving around during the workshop, so wear loose comfortable clothes and suitable footwear.

  • Is there a break? Are refreshments available?

    To make the most of our time together, the workshop will run right through from 9:30 to 12:00, with just a short comfort break in the middle of the workshop.

    If, like me, you need your caffeine hit, Summerhall Cafe is open from 9am.

    Although none of the activities will be strenuous, you might want to bring a water bottle to keep hydrated.

  • Photos?

    We will take some photographs during the workshop for social media and to promote future events. If you prefer not to be in any photos, please let us know.
