Inaugural Secondary Schools Global Challenge Managing Crisis on the Korean Peninsula

The Korean Peninsula is one of the world’s most important and challenging regions. The world’s major powers have competed (and sometimes even fought wars) for control of this strategically significant piece of international real estate. In recent years, North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong-Un, has grabbed international headlines with his provocative nuclear and missile tests. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, North Korea shut itself off completely from the outside world. Kim Jong-Un vanished for a period, sparking rumours of his demise. While Kim remains alive and well, the continued COVID-19 crisis has caused widespread famine in North Korea, reigniting fears of a humanitarian crisis that could see millions of refugees flooding into neighbouring countries.

The first of an annual series delivered by the Australian National University’s Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, the Inaugural Secondary Schools Global Challenge will take place at Canberra Grammar School on Friday 24 March 2023. Teams of students from Years 10-12 will have the opportunity to play the role of diplomats responding to a hypothetical crisis on the Korean Peninsula, guided and supported throughout the day by subject matter experts and former government officials from the Australian National University’s Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs.

Schools around the Canberra region are invited to register a team of five students from Years 10-12 to participate in the Challenge.
