Description

The Side Quest Society
Where teens connect - no phones, just human interactions.

Some teens LIGHT up in a big group. Some don't. All they really need is a room where they can show up as themselves without any pressure or expectations to be anything but who they want to be - and something better to do than scroll.

The Side Quest Society is a weekly session for 12-18 year-olds. Small groups, phones away, and a different activity each week. cycling through improv, teambuilding games, guest speakers, trivia, board and card game nights.

No expectations to do more or less than the next person. They join in at whatever level feels right, and leave having made a friend, learned something or at least laughed properly for an hour.

Why this group?

Confidence isn't taught, it's built - by doing slightly brave things in a place where it's safe to make mistakes. Improv when you're not a performer. Talking to someone new. Being on a team with people you didn't choose. These are just some of the skills we're building here whilst also making new friendships.

Who's running it

Kevin - an educator with over 10 years experience working with young people, as a teacher, mentor, camp facilitator and workshop host. He built this because it's the room he needed as a teenager and never had.

FAQs

  • Do I need to book every week?

No; this is a casual group, so you can come whenever it suits. No ongoing commitment required unless you're in the 8-week bundle. Curious? Ask us at kevin@kevinchuofficial.com to find out more

Every new participant must fill out the following onboarding form by the day before attending

  • Is this a "program" or just a hangout?

A bit of both. It's structured enough for them to have specific things to do that help them connect and grow, but casual enough that it doesn't feel like school.

  • What about their phones?

When we start, everyone will be asked to put their phones in their bag and placed in a safe space. They can ask me to take photos and share it later so they can show and tell you all about it. If you need to reach your child urgently during the session, you'll have my number. Otherwise, I encourage you to leave them a text or voicemail for them to get to when they're finished.

  • What if my teen doesn't know anyone else there?

This is actually ideal! There's a huge difference between the way they behave at school with their friends, and when they're with different people. They get a chance to explore who they are without the need to uphold/protect/hide from any prior history or reputation.

  • What kind of teens is this for?

Honestly - any teen (12-18) who just wants a space to connect, unwind and be part of something.

Please note that this is not an NDIS event. While we accept any and all individuals, this is not a substitute for any form of therapy or professional support.

If you have any questions around this, please reach out to make sure this is the right fit for your child.

  • Can I watch my teen?

You may come in to drop your child off and pick them up, but parents aren't allowed during sessions as this can change the way they show up.

  • What actually happens during sessions?

We'll start off with a quick icebreaker before getting into it (depending on what the activity for the week is). I'll explain any and all rules/boundaries to ensure everyone's on the same page with what's happening and how we can protect the space. Towards the end of the session, I might host a little reflection session to share any highlights of the session so we can have a little giggle or spotlight any proud moments in the room.

  • Any other questions?

Send across an email at kevin@kevinchuofficial.com - I love hearing from the community. There are no silly questions 🙂
