Description

The Side Quest Society - for teens
Where teens play games - no phones, just human interactions.

Some teens LIGHT up in a big group. Some don't. All they really need is a room where they can show up as themselves without any pressure or expectations to be anything but who they are.

The Side Quest Society is a weekly session for 12-18 year-olds to come together and play games/activities in small groups without their phones. They'll come home with stories to share and maybe even a new game. If they make a new friend, GREAT!

Format

4:20-4:30 Doors open and pre-session mingling (there'll be a space to put bags down and a box for phones to be safely put away)

4:30-4:35 Quick intro - just your name

4:40-4:45 House rules (boring, but important)

4:45-5:35 Activities (we'll do a little vote to pick the activity - options include improv/theatresports, teambuilding, board games)

5:35-5:40 Quick reflection - one thing we loved, one thing we'd change and one thing we're grateful for

5:40-5:45 Home time/post-session mingling (or one more round of games before we get booted out!)

Nb: if your teen doesn't want any photos or videos taken, please let us know.

For now, we'll decide as a group what we feel like - eventually, we'll rotate activities and have a formal schedule. For now, they'll have a selection of activities to choose from.

Why this group?

There are a handful of spaces for teens to learn a new skill or practice something together, but they all need us to perform or be serious about a certain sport, skillset or belief. This is a group for kind teens to just play games for the sake of having fun without phones. Kevin will be running the events so they'll be looked after (no horribly awkward situations or weird encounters).

Who's running it

Kevin - an educator with over 10 years experience working with young people, as a teacher, mentor, camp facilitator and workshop host.

FAQs

  • Do I need to book every week?

No; this is a casual group, so you can come whenever it suits. No ongoing commitment required unless you're in the 8-week bundle. Curious? Ask us at kevin@sparknextgen.com to find out more

Every new participant must fill out the following onboarding form by the day before attending

    https://forms.gle/WjVKRS17TAbsM3Bs7

  • Is this a "program" or just a hangout?

A bit of both. It's structured enough for them to have specific things to do that help them connect and grow, but casual enough that it doesn't feel like school.

  • What about their phones?

When we start, everyone will be asked to put their phones in their bag and placed in a safe space. They can ask me to take photos and share it later so they can show and tell you all about it. If you need to reach your child urgently during the session, you'll have my number. Otherwise, I encourage you to leave them a text or voicemail for them to get to when they're finished.

  • What if my teen doesn't know anyone else there?

This is actually ideal! There's a huge difference between the way they behave at school with their friends, and when they're with different people. They get a chance to explore who they are without the need to uphold/protect/hide from any prior history or reputation.

  • What kind of teens is this for?

Honestly - any teen (12-18) who is kind and just wants a space to connect, unwind and be part of something.

Please note that this is not an NDIS exclusive event. While we accept any and all individuals, this is not a substitute for any form of therapy or professional support.

If you have any questions around this, please reach out to make sure this is the right fit for your child.

  • Can I watch my teen?

You may come in to drop your child off and pick them up, but parents aren't allowed during sessions as this can change the way they show up.

  • Any other questions?

Send across an email at kevin@sparknextgen.com - I love hearing from the community. There are no silly questions 🙂
