Australia has a large waste problem and creation of a circular economy will help to alleviate this huge issue. ABC's War on Waste stated that:

•Every year the waste that Australia generates is growing at twice the rate of our population - Australia uses over 10 million plastic bags a day

•The average Australian family throws out over $3,500 or ~1 tonne worth of food every year

•6 tonnes of clothes are thrown out in Australia every 10-minutes

Professor Veena Sahajwalla is one of Australia's top innovators. She runs the UNSW Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT), which is working to tackle the world's waste problem by creating useful products out of items which would otherwise go to landfill. This session will discuss the SMaRT Centre's work, the circular economy, and the need for science and business to work together to solve the worlds most pressing challenges.
