The Staging Post - Online Movie Night

Price $10 – $55 AUD + BF Get tickets

Event description

This is a movie with real heart. It tells the story of Khadim and Muzafar, two Hazaras that are part of the refugee community at Cisarua, not far from Jakarta, Indonesia. Cisarua is where many of the boats to Australia left from, until the boats were stopped.

Asylum seekers and refugees are allowed to stay in Indonesia, while they wait for settlement in a third country. However, they cannot work, study or educate their children. They are either dependent on charity and family, or perhaps have to stay in detention centres. The refugees here discovered they had everything they needed to build a community. However, they realised their primary need was the education of their children. The issue was, they were not allowed to attend local schools, and UN rules forbade them from organising and advocating for themselves. They were meant to be quiet and good little boys and girls!

The Hazara refugees here (Hazaras are a minority from Afghanistan), discovered they had everything they needed to build a community. However, they realised their primary need was the education of their children. The issue was, they were not allowed to attend local schools, and UN rules forbade them from organising and advocating for themselves. They were meant to be quiet and good little boys and girls!

This movie is the story of how they overcame their fear, and learnt to live together as a community, and, despite the UN saying no, they built a school, that became a focal point for their community. It is a story of endurance, hope, friendship and community. Through their courage, they changed the policy of the UN which led to the development of many more refugee led schools in Indonesia. Thus one person, changed the lives of 1000s.

The Staging Post Online Screening

I have been a refugee advocate for many years. This movie is to raise money for the Qanbari family to come to Australia on a sponsored work visa. They arrived in 2015, after the 2014 cut off, so won't be settled under Australia's normal humanitarian programme. The Qanbari family are Hazara UNHCR recognised refugees from Afghanistan. They fled from persecution and reached Indonesia. They have been waiting for resettlement for 9 years. A group of concerned citizens have been trying to assist the family's resettlement in Australia. We have made good progress and now need to raise $30,000 to pay for visa the work visa and relocation fees, that will allow Alireza Qanbari to work as a mechanic and fabricator in Australia
