The Stories of Country, with Warralgurniya

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Warralgurniya (‘singing’) is a cross-cultural musical collaboration sharing the language and knowledge of Thiinma Elder Peter Salmon from the Upper Gascoyne region of WA.
At 89 years of age, Mr Salmon is a key knowledge holder for Thiinma people, a working stockman and now WAM Song of the Year Award winning songwriter. In collaboration with musician Rosie Sitorus and linguist Jacqui Cook, he expertly weaves contemporary yarns informed by ancient knowledge with contemporary country, blues and folk influences.

His lyrics, written in his mother languages of Thiinma and Warriyangga, tell the stories of his country and his incredible life, and are rooted in the knowledge taught to him by his old people. Warralgurniya brings Mr Salmon’s unique living history to life through music.

Held in the intimate space of R.T café, enjoy native Australian cuisine, such as crocodile filo cups with spicy aniseed myrtle slaw, Geraldton wax poached prawn and quandong sweet chilli mango rolled in a lettuce leaf.

Warralgurniya will be supported by other local performances.
