THE STORY OF PLASTIC takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution and the worldwide effect it has on the health of our planet and the people who inhabit it. Spanning three continents, the film illustrates the ongoing catastrophe and features interviews with experts and activists on the front lines of the fight, revealing the disastrous consequences of the flood of plastic smothering ecosystems and poisoning communities around the world, and the global movement that is rising up in response.

The panel discussion with local and national activists will connect the global themes with our local context, inspiring individual and collective action.

Panelists include:

Hannah Blumhardt and Liam Prince: The Rubbish Trip and Takeaway Throwaways. Hannah and Liam are the two No-Waste Nomads behind The Rubbish Trip. They've lived without a rubbish bin for over five years and travel Aotearoa running workshops.
Sophie Weenink Smith. Sophie goes to Nelson College for Girls and is passionate about helping our precious environment and animals. She has organised multiple beach and stream clean-ups and runs a Facebook site: Ecogirl NZ.
Karen Driver, Envision. Karen has 14+ years’ experience of working in the zero waste sector. Her passion is driving and supporting community-led solutions focused on avoiding waste and making producers responsible for their products and packaging. Karen is one of the focus leads of the Resources and Waste subgroup of the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum.
Jeremy Stead, Tasman Bay Guardians. Jeremy’s day job consists of running EthicallyMAD (Ethically making a difference), a marketing company he co-founded to help businesses and social enterprises who are doing the right thing. When he’s not working, he volunteers for Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR), Tasman Bay Guardians, as the beach clean up guy, and the Nelson coastguard.
Olga Pantos, marine biologist and co-leader of the Aotearoa Impact & Mitigation of Microplastics MBIE-funded Endeavour Research programme looking the impact of microplastics on Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique ecosystems and taonga.
Claire Keeling, Ekos: Claire has worked as a waste minimisation advisor for small and corporate organisations around NZ and currently works as a Carbon Analyst for Ekos – a social enterprise specialising in carbon footprint services and carbon forest project development. She is also one of the founding members of Businesses for Climate Action, a local group that is focused on businesses building a low-carbon & resilient future for businesses in the Te Tauihu region.
