Event description

The Pachamama Cinema is proud to present a double documentary screening in line with Plastic Free July. The main screening with be The Story of Plastic alongside a short film by Sea Shepherd Australia called Untrashing Dhulpain followed by a Q&A with Trent Williams the Marine Debris Coordinator for Sea Shepherd Australia.

THE STORY OF PLASTIC
is a groundbreaking feature-length documentary takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution and its impact on the health of our planet. Spanning three continents, the film illustrates the ongoing catastrophe of extraction – skies choked with poisonous emissions from plastic production and processing, and its impacts on the families that live on the frontlines. So much of the untold story of plastic begins here, in the shadow of sprawling petrochemical complexes run by giants like Dow, ExxonMobil, Chevron Phillips, in Houston, Texas – one of the topmost plastic-producing regions in the world.

UNTRASHING DHULPAIN is a short documentary produced in 2018, Sea Shepherd joined forces with the Dhimurru indigenous rangers of North-East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory for a remote marine debris clean-up mission. Djulpan is a remote beach, far from any town or city. It is a culturally significant place for the Yolngu people and an important nesting ground for turtles. However, for the past decade, the Dhimurru rangers have been faced with an increasing tide of plastic pollution arriving on their coastline. Together, the team's plan was to remove as much plastic from the beach as possible. What they found was beyond comprehension; 250 million pieces of rubbish along the 14km stretch of remote beach. 'Untrashing Djulpan' tells their story.
