About the Venue - Bucketty's Brewing Co, Brookvale

There is so much to learn about Bucketty's and its humble beginnings.  It's a family owned business with much blood, sweat and tears making it what it is today. 

I can't think of a better place for Story Room Aus to call home, after-all beer and stories are like peas in a pod, they just fit perfectly.

The Food

Check out the menu. You certainly won't starve to death while you listen to some great stories. We are however trying to learn how many people might buy meals, as Nick the owner will open the food truck especially for us.

How to get to Bucketty's

The B1 will drop you on Pittwater Road, not far from Warringah Mall.  It is a short walk down Orchard Road to number 26. 

If you drive there is loads of free parking in the surrounding streets of Brookvale. 

Meet the Storytellers (in no particular order)

John Hockney

John has been an Accredited Storyteller since 1983.  He told childrens stories for many years then became part of the “3 Peas in a Pod” along with Christine Greenough and Sue Alvarez specialising in Aged Care stories of bygone days. John has told nationally and internationally and has a regular annual story appointment at Surawinacot University in Bangkok.

He has published three book “Remember When – How to unlock life stories”,

“Open Hearts – Hidden Lives”, “Never Worry What the Neighbours Think” A biography of the Hockney family published in UK and sold world wide.  For the last 20 years John has conducted regular “Life Stories” workshops at the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre. Currently he is completing “Your Life Your Story” – a handbook for writing life stories

Kiran Shah

Kiran trained as a social worker and early childhood educator before she discovered storytelling in 1999. There was no looking back and she has now been telling stories professionally for 25 years. She especially loves folktales as she feels that there is much to learn from the collective wisdom handed down over generations.

Kiran’s storytelling journey has taken her to various countries to present storytelling workshops and performances including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Kenya and Iran. She tells to audiences of all ages and in a variety of venues.

Kiran is the current Vice-President of the Australian Storytelling Guild, NSW. She also co-hosts the Blue Mountains Story Circle via Zoom one Sunday a month.

Michael Patterson

Michael usually combines his storytelling with magic in shows for younger audiences. Each year he performs for more than 10000 children in preschools, child care centres, vacation cares and in schools. He also performs online, something he learned during the first COVID lockdown when we were all floundering at home wondering “What do we do now?”

His shows contain important - human - messages for the children around resilience, friendships, imagination and believing in yourself.

He’s trained in acting, improv and clown and is a bit of a yoga nut.

You’re in for a treat tonight as the real-life story he’ll be sharing with you he has never shared in public before. And may never again.

Christine Greenough

Christine, apart from being an Actor/Director/Producer, is also a professional Stand-Up Storyteller. In 1997 she co-founded the tandem storytelling company “The Talespinners”. The company performed between 1997 – 2016 to children and adults throughout Australia, Asia, UK and USA. During that time, she and her Storytelling partner, Sue Alvarez, co-created several multi-sensory and interactive “I Remember When” programmes for seniors in retirement villages and nursing homes.

Now telling solo, she is in demand to tell around the storytelling circuit.  She has told at “Tales Told Live” in pubs around Sydney, “Generation Women”, “This is Totally…F..cked”. This year she opened and closed for “Chatterbox Live” at the Rocks for the Sydney Fringe. One of her favourite gigs is right here for Story Room where she was delighted to be asked to guest host the September program.

Christine loves telling as well as listening to stories and to see the interaction of the audience as those stories take hold, entertain and hopefully, in some cases, inspire.

David Callan 

David Callan is an actor, comedian, voice artist, podcaster, teacher and ex-spy who graduated from ASIO in 1993 with majors in counterterrorism, counter-espionage and clowning. His voice can be heard everywhere from ads and animated series to ABC’s Media Watch, while as an actor he’s played coppers, criminals, lawyers and even Peter Sellers (twice) as well as innumerable appearances as an improvisor and stand-up comic. David has managed to combine his previous life as a spy with his current life as a comic when he created his smash-hit one-man show “I Spied – True Confessions of an ex-ASIO Spook” which garnered the only ever 6-out-of-5 star rating along with Best in the Fest nominations in the Adelaide and Perth Fringes, and the Adelaide Fringe Critics’ Choice Award. In 2020, he was commissioned to create a 12 episode podcast around I Spied and four years and 170 episodes later, he can be heard every Monday dissecting, explaining and generally deriding the goings on in the world of spooks, terrorists and global political intrigue.

Christine Carlton

Christine Carlton is a Storyteller and Educator who has performed and facilitated workshops throughout Australia and internationally. She loves how stories challenge, entertain, inform, develop and delight both the tellers and the audience. For over 35 years Christine has conducted workshops with groups of children and adults, organisations, and lectured in Story and Drama in Education at the University of Western Sydney. She also provides individual coaching and mentoring for people keen to expand their storytelling skills. Christine has been the Convenor for all of the 'Weaving Stories Together' - Sydney International Storytelling Conferences and is President of the Australian Storytelling Guild, NSW.
