The Tale of That Copyrighted Black and Gothic Upcycling with Maddy

Event description

You might not have heard of "Vantablack", but it's a wild and curly tale of colour copyrights, light absorbing darkness, satellites and...home decor!?

Simply put, Vantablack is the darkest black pigment humans have created, originally as a form of military camouflage. It's extremely matte, meaning it doesn't reflect light, giving it its extra dark appearance.

Soon after it's invention, this was copyrighted by a famous painter and since then the funniest battle of the pigments ensued.

In this class we've gotten our hands on some of the super black pigments created since and we are going to upcycle some op shop treasures for an instant gothic vibe!

We'll provide you with paint, a porcelain project, and an art lesson! Or BYO ceramic vessel for a discounted ticket.

What will we cover?

In this class you will learn:

  • All about Vantablack and colour copyrights in modern art
  • How to prep ceramics for painting - sanding and undercoat options
  • Inspiration and design tips.
  • Go home with your new obsession: super black decor!

    Who will be teaching?

Maddy (she/her) is a crafty hobbyist based in Narrm who has a big heart for colour, expression and over-the-top jewellery. She enjoys working with all sorts of materials and mediums, and repurposing everyday items into expressions of art and fashion. As a musician, these wonky and not-so-wonky creations often find their way onto stages around Melbourne.

Maddy also enjoys carving and printing lino cuts, paper collage, and combining the two.
