THE TREE OF ECSTASY AND UNBEARABLE SADNESS

Film Screening and Q&A with Matt Ottley: A Night of Reflection and Celebration

Join award-winning artist / writer / composer Matt Ottley for a screening of his groundbreaking film followed by a conversation about his life, work, loves and hopes.

Special guest: The Hon Dr Andrew Refshauge, Former Deputy NSW Premier and Minister for Health.

The Tree of Ecstasy and Unbearable Sadness is a groundbreaking, large-scale multi-modal project weaving together the worlds of literature, music and visual art in the poignant story of one boy’s journey into mental illness. A lifetime in the making and five years in the creating, this astonishing new work by Matt Ottley is a magnum opus in every conceivable way.

At the heart of the film is a 50-minute orchestral composition performed by the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno and local tenor Ben Reynolds. Through the film’s Ken Burns-like cinematic treatment Ottley invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and immerse themselves into a world of beauty and wonder.

Books are available for signing on the night.
