The Ultimate Overnight Koyasan Experience
Ultimate Overnight Koyasan Experience
Forest Therapy, Temple Stay & Sacred Mountain Journey
23–24 October 2026 | Koyasan, Japan

Short Event Summary
Step away from the pace of Osaka for an overnight journey into the sacred mountain community of Koyasan.
Travelling together by train, cable car and bus, we’ll spend the afternoon immersed in the forests of Mount Koya with a local Japanese Forest Therapy guide before settling into a traditional Buddhist temple stay.
Our overnight experience includes temple accommodation, dinner and breakfast, opportunities to participate in Buddhist morning practice and teachings, and time to explore the extraordinary natural and cultural surroundings of Koyasan.
A beautiful combination of nature, culture, history, stillness and Japanese hospitality.
About the Experience
The Ultimate Koyasan Experience is an overnight journey into one of Japan’s most culturally significant mountain communities.
Leaving the busy streets of Osaka behind, we’ll travel together by train, cable car and local bus, gradually making our way into the mountains of Wakayama and the sacred Buddhist community of Koyasan.
Once in Koyasan, we’ll leave our luggage at our temple accommodation before heading into the forest for the centrepiece of our experience — a three-hour Koyasan Forest Therapy Experience with a local Japanese guide.
Forest therapy, often described as forest bathing through the five senses, invites us to experience the natural environment slowly and attentively.
Our guide will introduce us to some of the history and natural environment surrounding the famous Okunoin area before leading us deeper into the forest.
There will be time to slow down, notice the landscape around us and simply experience the forest.
The experience concludes with time to relax at a mountain hut amongst the trees, enjoy the forest air and perhaps spend some quiet time in a hammock.
After our afternoon in the forest, we will return to our accommodation at Koyasan Shukubo Kumagaiji, where we will spend the night in a traditional Japanese-style tatami room within a Buddhist temple lodging.
Dinner will be served together at 5:30 pm, followed by a quiet evening in Koyasan.
The following morning provides another opportunity to experience temple life, with an optional Buddhist morning ceremony, sutra chanting and teachings, followed by breakfast.
This experience has been intentionally arranged as an opportunity to encounter Koyasan through several different lenses — journey, forest, culture, history, spirituality and simple time together in a remarkable place.

Exploring Koyasan
One of the joys of staying overnight is having time to experience Koyasan beyond our scheduled activities.
Many of the town's most memorable experiences involve simply walking through its forests, temple precincts and historic pathways.
Okunoin Cemetery Walk
Nearby Okunoin is one of Koyasan's most extraordinary places and can be explored on foot without an additional admission cost.
The atmospheric forest pathway winds through an immense historic cemetery beneath towering cedar trees, leading towards the sacred Okunoin temple precinct.
With thousands of memorials, stone lanterns and centuries of history scattered beneath the forest canopy, it offers a very different experience from our guided daytime Forest Therapy session.
If time and energy allow, we may choose to explore parts of Okunoin independently during our stay.
Walking here is less about rushing towards a destination and more about taking in the scale, stillness and history of the landscape.
Our Accommodation
We will stay at Koyasan Shukubo Kumagaiji, a traditional Buddhist temple lodging in Koyasan.
Our room is Japanese-style with tatami flooring and shared bathroom and toilet facilities.
Towels, slippers and basic toiletries are provided.
Guests may also have access to Japanese-style shared bathing facilities during the stay.
This is a temple stay rather than a conventional Western hotel, and part of the experience is embracing the simplicity, customs and rhythm of staying within a Buddhist temple environment.

Once we arrive in Koyasan, we will mostly move between our accommodation and activities on foot.

The Spirit of the Experience
This isn't about racing through another destination or ticking Koyasan off a sightseeing list.
It is an invitation to experience the journey itself.
From leaving Osaka and slowly climbing into the mountains, to walking beneath the trees with a local Forest Therapy guide, eating together within a Buddhist temple, wandering ancient pathways and perhaps beginning our morning listening to Shingon monks chant within the temple hall — this is an opportunity to spend a little time experiencing Koyasan rather than simply visiting it.
Slowly.
Curiously.
And with enough space to notice where we are.
