Academic activism: co-creating the university of the future
Description
The event aims to create space for the vital conversation about how we change academia to meet the needs of the current times. The current way Western academia is structured and run does not fit its original purpose, a place for critical thinking for the benefit of society, and fall short to address, or at times even feed, the multi-interconnected crises humanity is facing, from climate change to social injustices. It is important for students, academics, staff and unions to come together to rethink our academic institutions. By asking 'what is the purpose of academia?' and 'how does the university of the future look like?', we make the first steps towards a shared project that reimagine 21st century academia for the benefit of people and Planet.
The discussion will start with a panel discussing advocacy and activism at the ANU, with guest speakers from ANUSA, NTEU and student activists. This provides the opportunity to hear what it is available for people to engage with, why it is important, and the achievements gained over the years. The panel will followed by a creative activity to imagine together 'the university we wanna be part of' - from teaching and research to infrastructure and governance, 'how would you like our university to look like to really be the institution that support people and Planet to thrive?'.
This event is organized by Scientist Rebellion Canberra Hub, which will be launched at this event, in collaboration with ANUSA (ANU student union).
Some light refreshment will be served at the event :)
