  6. Writing Difficult Things -Tom Dauven: Sunday 27 April , 1.30 – 3.30pm

Writing Difficult Things -Tom Dauven: Sunday 27 April , 1.30 – 3.30pm ticket

CONTEXT WARNING - THIS WORKSHOP DISCUSSES AND INVOLVES SPEAKING/WRITING ABOUT TRAUMA. PLEASE DECIDE IF THIS WORKSHOP IS SUITABLE FOR YOU. Tom Dauven is a Western Australian poet who is currently writing a book composed entirely of difficult things. His poetry has appeared in various journals, anthologies, and on national radio and he is a regular face at Perth poetry events. He has just recently been published in Grieve – the Hunter Writers Centre anthology of grief and loss. Tom has a special interest in trauma informed writing and the catharsis generated by telling the untellable, the difficult and the painful aspects of life through poetry. Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Murdoch University and classifies his work as existing within the confessional poetry oeuvre. He counts his former lecturer Marcella Polain as a deep and abiding influence on his work and his poetry is known for its emotional honesty, brutal truth telling, self-deprecation, dark sense of humour and a little bit of hope which he struggles to keep in check. He prides himself on his writing being easy to understand and believes wholeheartedly that when a hard thing is said simply it resonates as little else can. When he isn’t writing you can find him engaging in his hobby of lapidary or hanging out at the pub doing a terrible impression of being a pool shark. On top of all of this Tom runs writing workshops that teach people how to give voice to their shadows so that healing can happen in that space and negative experiences and events can be transformed by the creative process into art that touches others and reminds them they are not alone. He is especially interested in the combination of sound and writing and is excited to explore a combination of those elements as well as other healing modalities in future workshops and events. WRITING DIFFICULT THINGS- The purpose of this workshop is the creation of poetry from intense emotional experiences and the use of poetry to help process unhealed trauma. Tom asks that you come as your authentic self, allow yourself to be open and let the words come as they will. You will need to bring a journal and a pen or a laptop depending on your chosen medium for writing and a little fearlessness to face your own shadows and share those with the group if you feel brave enough to do so. The workshop is a mixture of poetry reading, soundscapes created from singing bowls and personal self-expression through poetry creation. Tom will share work from his book in progress - Punctum as well as other examples of emotionally resonating poetry, then its your turn to write under the influence of subtle prompts and gentle music, before coming together and sharing at the end. Joining Tom at his event, Writing Difficult Things- A Workshop with WA Poet Tom Dauven, is Rita Gordon, who will provide sound healing and meditational tones to provide comfort and healing energy. Rita is a transformational guide devoted to helping others break free from generational patterns and ancestral cycles that keep them stuck. Through the healing power of sound, meditation, and somatic awareness, she creates safe, sacred spaces for deep nervous system regulation, emotional release, and soul remembrance. Rita’s work weaves together ancestral lineage healing with embodied practices, reminding each person that their freedom, peace, and power have always lived within. Sunday, 27 April 1.30 – 3.30 pm (includes afternoon tea & refreshment break) Room 2 @ The Victoria Park Community Centre; 248 Gloucester Street, East Victoria Park.
