The Voice of the Hungarian Soul

Dr József Terék, one of the world’s leading tárogató players, will perform in Christchurch on the 11th of November 2026 only. As far as we know, the tárogató has never been played live in New Zealand before.

The tárogató is a Hungarian woodwind instrument recognised as a national treasure of Hungary and the symbol of Hungarian freedom. Its warm, rich tone is often called the voice of the Hungarian soul.

The programme includes works by Kodály and Bartók, Rákóczi melodies, verbunkos, csárdás, folk songs and operetta, plus a few surprises from jazz and Latin music.
