Event description

Join us at the Wildflower Playhouse in Taos for a special four-night screening series of The Way We Carry Water, a short film by New Mexico filmmaker Makaio Frazier. Filmed across four seasons in the valleys and acequia communities of northern New Mexico, the film follows Marcos, a young man grappling with the sudden loss of his grandfather while taking on the responsibility of preserving his family’s acequia — a centuries-old irrigation system that sustains both the land and the traditions tied to it.

Rooted in the heritage and rhythms of northern New Mexico, The Way We Carry Water is a deeply personal reflection on family, grief, and the enduring relationship between people and place. The film’s seasonal structure mirrors cycles of nature, loss, and renewal, capturing the beauty, labor, and quiet spirituality that define life along the acequias.

Each screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and select cast and crew, offering insight into the making of the film and its connection to local culture. Opening night will feature a special community dinner and panel discussion centered on storytelling, land, and tradition in northern New Mexico.
