Description

Are you looking for a community-focused way to be a part of the preloved fashion "economy"? The Why Buy New Clothes Swap is an excellent option to gift clothes no longer suitable for you, and receive new clothes that suit your unique style! This event is a local solution to ease the global textile waste problem.

The event is a relaxed and a welcoming space to connect, share and learn about intentional clothing choices. It encourages us to value quality over quantity, while strengthening our community connections through sustainable action.

FAQs

  • How many items of clothing can I bring?

Bring up to 10 items of freshly laundered, quality clothing or accessories (eg belts, shoes, hats)

  • What do you mean by clean and quality items?

Clothes brought to the swap MUST be clean, good quality and in good condition.

    • Clean means washed and free from pet dander and stains. Clothes don't have to be ironed, but a crushed and crinkled piece of clothing is more likely to remain on the rack.

    • Good quality means something you would confidently gift to a friend

    • Good condition means not faded, torn, stained, warped, or holey.

Please be mindful and considerate of what other swappers will be happy to receive. Clothes will be checked upon arrival and items that don't meet this criteria will be given back to you.

  • What kind of clothes and accessories can I bring?

Examples of clothing that do well at a clothes swap include tops, dresses and skirts. Other examples of items to bring include pants, skirts, tops, jumpers, coats, jumpsuits, shirts, catsuits, shoes, bags, shorts, scarves, hats, dresses, sunglasses, jewellery. Items less likely to be re-homed include activewear. We welcome clothing designed for male, female, adaptive and all body types.

Please don't bring: Underwear, lingerie, swimwear, overused pyjamas or overused workout gear as these won't be accepted. Clothes that are smelly, mouldy, dirty, too worn out, pilled or damaged won’t be accepted - you'll need to take these home.

  • What sizes do you accept?

For this clothes swap we'll accept clothing sizes from Womens Size 4 and up, and Mens XS such as size 26 and up.

We won't accept babies, kids and tweens style clothing.

  • How many items am I allowed to take home?

You can take home as many items as you donated. So if you donated 8 x items, then you can take home no more than 8 x items.

  • What happens if I can't find clothes that fit me or are not my style?

This is where we encourage you to spread the word at the event...the more people that come to the event, the more diversity in style and sizes to choose from! See the event as a fun shopping experience - you never know what you'll find at a clothes swap!

  • What happens with excess clothing from the swap?

Excess clothing from the swap will be donated to selected op shops in the region.

  • What happens in the half hour drop off time?

Everyone who's registered for the swap will be dropping off their clothes at this time. There'll be a check in counter upon arrival. A raft of volunteer sorters will hang the clothes in that time to ensure an easier swapping experience for you when the swap opens at 10.30am. There'll be a brief introduction and thankyou before the swapping begins.

If you've dropped off your clothes and waiting for the 10.30am, this is a great time to enjoy the included morning tea from the Kotara High School P & C, relax on the outdoor grassy space and have a chat to other swappers.

  • I don't ned more clothes, I'd just like to give you up to 10 items

If you're unable to make the swap and have 10 items to give, please buy a ticket anyway. This event is a fundraising initiative, and it is only through ticket sales that this event can take place.

The event is not just about getting rid of clothes from your wardrobe. It's about creating a sense of community and mindfully gifting and receiving clothes. There'll always be enough clothes at the swap without having additional clothes at the end of the event for volunteers to transport to op shops.

If you prefer not to buy a ticket for gifting only, then please donate your clothes directly to an op shop.
