The Winter's Tale
Written by William Shakespeare, directed by Adam Cook and presented by the Graduating Company of 2024 as part of the Shakespeare Series
About this play:
"Thou met'st with things dying, I with things new-born."
The Winter’s Tale is the story of a delusional and paranoid despot who tears his family apart. When King Leontes suspects his wife of infidelity, he throws her in prison and initiates a chain of events that will destroy his once-happy family. But can he find redemption for his crimes? Can his senseless acts of violence somehow be undone? When is a man no better than a beast?
One of Shakespeare’s greatest plays and one of his last, The Winter’s Tale smashes all the rules. Unity of time, place and action are hurled aside as we range across Europe, from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy, across a time span of sixteen years.
But this is the new Shakespeare, after he completed his great tragedies, and the tough struggle for redemption yields flickers of hope. Darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a breath-taking conclusion that tests the limits of hope, humanity, and our capacity for wonder.
