In Sarah DeLappe’s 2016 play, The Wolves, an undefeated indoor soccer team warms up for their next game while navigating friendship, politics, privilege, and the terrifying business of becoming yourself. On their artificial-grass battlefield, these young women are strong, funny, contradictory and completely in charge of their own turf, even as the world beyond their bubble begins to press in. The Wolves is not really about soccer. It is about what happens when young women find their voices, test their boundaries and realise they do not need to wait for permission to take up space.
