The Wombats and Stars of Brookfield Conservation Park

Join Park Rangers, the Friends of Brookfield and astronomers from The Backyard Universe for an experience you won’t forget!

Brookfield Conservation Park is home to a population of southern hairy-nosed wombats. Join park rangers and volunteers/researchers from the Friends of Brookfield Conservation Park for a guided sunset walk to witness and learn about the lives of the southern hairy-nosed wombat as they come out of their burrows to graze. Following the walk there will be a wombat's Q & A around the campfire for you to ask any questions you have about these amazing animals.

The park also lies within Australia’s only International Dark Sky Reserve making it one of the best places on earth to gaze at the stars above. As the sky darkens, the team from The Backyard Universe (weather permitting) will have telescopes set up for you check out the stars and planets above.

Following the event, you’re welcome to camp overnight in the park. If you’re camping you will need to arrive between 12pm – 5pm, so you have adequate time to set-up before the event starts at 6pm. Campers will need to depart before 11am the following morning.

Accessibility:

This wombat walk will include a guided walk which is approximately 3km over unsealed and uneven tracks. There are no accessible toilet facilities available on site.

What to Bring:

• Meals and snacks
• Drinking water
• Warm clothing (beanie, scarfe, gloves – temperatures can drop extremely low in this area)
• Enclosed footwear / hiking boots / suitable to get wet
• Torch / headlamp
• Camera
• Snacks to enjoy around the campfire
• Binoculars / telescope

*portable toilets will be made available for this event.

If camping overnight you will need to be self-sufficient as there is no water or power available on site. A temporary portable toilet will be available for the evening. A communal campfire will be available. Campers are not permitted to light their own campfires.

You will need to bring:

• Tent/camper trailer
• Camping gear (Bedding, cooking equipment (no solid fuel), lighting, etc)
• Meals - dinner and breakfast
• Large water container for drinking and washing

Brookfield Conservation Park - Old homestead and shearing shed area.

Park entrance is located on Sturt Highway between Truro and Blanchetown - 34.5km east of Truro or 11km west of Blanchetown. The old homestead is located at the end of the park entrance track

• Events may be cancelled at short notice due to unsuitable weather conditions or forecast fire danger. If an event is cancelled you will be notified by email and SMS. Where possible we will aim to reschedule the event to an alternate date.
