The Workshop is in the Mind
According to Lord Buddha, we all have marvellous potential for clarity, contentment, and love and the rest of the positive human qualities. In fact, he says, these qualities are our natural state, and that the development of them to perfection is the job of a spiritual practitioner.
Our main stumbling block is the deeply held assumption that attachment, anger, depression and the other deluded states of mind - especially marigpa: ignorance, ego-grasping, the root neurosis that fiercely asserts and upholds a made-up self - are innate within us. But the Buddha has found from his own direct experience that they are not at the core of our being and thus can be removed.
Therefore the heart job of a Buddhist is to identify these misconceptions and, crucially, to distinguish them from the virtues.
During our two classes we will investigate Buddha’s model of the mind and learn how to do this difficult but doable job - for our own sake and the sake of others.
