Thea Rossen and Schools - The Junk Orchestra Project

What happens when buckets, bottles, boxes and bits and pieces are transformed into musical instruments? Come along and find out at Thea Rossen’s Junk Orchestra Project!

This fun-filled short concert celebrates the end of Thea’s 2026 residency with the Orange Regional Conservatorium. It will bring together students from Nashdale Public School and Spring Hill Public School for a performance bursting with rhythm, imagination and plenty of unexpected sounds.

Inspired by the plants, animals and landscapes found around Orange, the students have been exploring how everyday objects can be turned into instruments and used to create music. With found and handmade instruments in their hands, they will work together as one big Junk Orchestra to bring the sounds and stories of our local environment to life.

There may also be some musical surprises along the way, including brand-new compositions written by ORC students and performed for an audience for the very first time!

Thea Rossen is a versatile and imaginative percussionist from Perth who specialises in bringing music to life for young people. She has vast experience working on education programs and concerts all across Australia and is the ORC’s 2026 Musica Viva Artist in Residence.
