    Event description

The Hillary Institute and Edmund Hillary Fellowship are holding our first convening of The Mission Studio from 28-30 July in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland. This is where we are taking a mission-led response to climate innovation, focusing first on Nature Restoration - how we can conserve and regenerate the health of Aotearoa NZ’s whenua, awa and moana, and natural flora and fauna.

This is an invitation-only opportunity to be part of a facilitated community-of-action - a small (30 max) group including iwi, industry, government, leaders and community - people like you, who are motivated by climate action and outcomes, not just discussion. The programme integrates te ao Māori/Māori world view and māturanga Māori/knowledge and practices of caring for our natural environment.

The climate and biodiversity crises are inextricably linked. Our native ecosystems remove and store carbon, increase our resilience to climate change impacts and support thriving biodiversity. Our natural land and oceans environment is being significantly degraded by monocropping, intensified use, pollution and climate change. Aotearoa NZ is threatened by species loss, water degradation, ocean acidification and ecosystem breakdown. Alongside decarbonisation, this restoration is critical if we are to live within planetary boundaries.

The purpose of this Mission Studio pilot is to collectively amplify innovation on nature restoration.

About Hillary Institute & Edmund Hillary Fellowship

    • Recognising, rewarding and nurturing great leadership, the Hillary Institute’s purpose is to recognise transformative leaders mid-career that are making outstanding contributions towards improving the human condition. It is a Charitable Trust, launched by Sir Edmund Hillary in 2007 and EHF’s parent organisation.
    • The Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF) is a community of 500+ innovators, entrepreneurs and investors committed to New Zealand as a basecamp for global impact. Our purpose is to partner with Aotearoa NZ to find and build solutions to our toughest challenges. Our vision is that Aotearoa inspires global leadership and solutions for future generations, built on principles of Tangata Tiriti and values of Sir Edmund Hillary.
    • Together, we are driving change for a better future for our planet and people.

    About The Mission Studio

    • On 23 February 2023, the Hillary Institute & Edmund Hillary Fellowship announced our plans to build and scale systems transformation for global impact from Aotearoa NZ and introduced The Mission Studio - working with our Laureates, Fellows, iwi, industry, government, leaders and communities around our toughest challenges.
    • At the same time we announced climate innovation as our first grand challenge - a befitting start given climate change is touching every corner of our planet - and that we had identified four mission areas to focus on (energy transition, nature restoration, food sustainability, resilient communities).
    • This pilot kicks off The Mission Studio.
