Theseus' Spaceship
Event description
In an ancient Greek thought experiment, the Ship of Theseus has all of its parts replaced as they wear out until eventually none of the original parts remain, raising the question – is it still the same ship? Theseus’ Spaceship examines this existential idea with a modern perspective regarding technology, nature, and art.
This new multimedia concert piece by Australian composer Richard Sanderson explores the impact that technology can have on replacing, replicating, and interpreting aspects of the world. Scored for a duo of cello and percussion with accompanying electronic sounds and ambient visuals, the performance will flow between transforming birdsongs, medieval-inspired dances, and a series of abstract soundscapes to evoke ecstatic and ominous atmospheres surrounding our relationship with the double-edged sword of technology.
