Thinking Small // Special Edition Workshop Tour @ Thor's Hammer: Friday 15 December
Event description
Join our ‘Special Edition’ Thinking Small Workshop Tour, specifically focused on the journey of smaller timber lengths as they are transformed into the pieces that you see in Thinking Small.
We will be running four Workshop Tours, each starting at 11am on each of the following Fridays: November 24th, December 1st, 8th and 15th. Be sure to book the tour for your preferred date. This registration page is for the final tour on Friday 15th December.
In the tour, you’ll learn about the smaller lengths of demolition timber we have put to use in the creation of small(er) things, and the incredible technology that has enabled us to do so with minimal waste and maximum precision.
This is a really great opportunity to get to know us a little better and learn about the philosophy underpinning Thinking Small—we love welcoming people to our space and sharing what we do. You could also bring along any teenagers in your life (N.B. anyone under 16 must be supervised) to get them fired up about a career in sustainability, design, timber recycling, furniture-making or joinery.
What to Expect
We’ll be taking visitors on a yard and stock tour, explaining how smaller lengths (1m - 1.5m) of raw demolition timbers have been transformed into the pieces within Thinking Small. You’ll gain insight into how this happens (denailing, docking etc.) and learn about why we felt it was important to put shorter lengths to good use.
After the yard and stock tour, you’ll have a chance to visit our joinery and see our 5-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine in action. Our CNC machine is a relatively recent addition to our workshop and Thor has been busy developing the software programs on which the CNC runs.
The CNC enables us to achieve production efficiencies, minimise waste and create some really cool effects. We cannot wait to share with you what the CNC has been able to help us create!
Finally, you’ll head upstairs to the Mixing Room Gallery and Showroom, to check out the pieces in Thinking Small, and talk through some of the design thinking behind the collection. You’ll also have the chance to purchase anything you have your eye on.
There will be four Workshop Tours available in the lead up to Christmas. Each tour commences at 11:00am sharp on the following Fridays:
- Friday 24 November
- Friday 1 December
- Friday 8 December
- Friday 15 December
Each tour is expected to last approximately 50 minutes. It’s free to attend, but tickets must be reserved because spaces are limited.
Please note
- While there is no charge to join in, you must reserve your space for the tour.
- Kids/teenagers under 16 should be supervised by an adult.
- There is a fair bit of walking and standing on the tour, but you are welcome to bring your own fold up chair. The last part of the tour is up two flights of stairs, so it is not suitable for those with mobility issues—we're very sorry to those who that will affect.
