Thinking With Your Hands - Artist Workshop with Ian Johnston
Event description
Ian Johnston was a full-time professional ocean racing skipper for 11 years and 150,000 sea miles. He is holder of numerous race records, a member of the yachting hall of fame, is one of the founders of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival, a wooden boat builder and has a Master Class 5 ticket. He has been a consultant on selective harvesting methods for Forestry Tasmania. He is author of a book on the Southwest of Tasmania, “The Shank”. He now spends his time using his boat-building experience to create steam- bent, laminated timber artworks that push the limits of physics.
In this workshop, Ian will bring along his steam box to teach us how to tie wood in knots, share a bit about the beauty of high-quality timber and the things you can do with it. Light refreshments will be provided; capacity is strictly limited so RSVP right away!
This activity was assisted through Arts Tasmania as part of the Perennial Residency program at Art Farm Birchs Bay.
