Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic flagged during a recent National Press Club address that the Government is placing a focus on the regulatory issues emerging from rapid growth in the use of AI. This sentiment is being echoed around the world as governments grapple with the rise of powerful AIs sending shockwaves through every part of society.

The list of regulatory issues where governments may need to act are growing fast - AI bias creating exclusions and unfairness in the community, AI-driven digital addictions, AI generation of malevolent sexual abuse materials, AI-facilitated harassment, AI-enabled surgical predatory consumer marketing and disinformation - the landscape is a minefield in a fog.

Negligent, naive or deliberately harmful use of AI is not just a risk - it’s now a reality and it’s growing exponentially.

We’re at a pivotal moment where how we regulate AI in society could create the conditions for Australia to benefit from the opportunity AI offers, or could enable untold suffering, harm and economic uncertainty.
