Since the late 1980's suicide in young people in Aotearoa-New Zealand has consistently and persistently been on the rise.

It is now the primary cause of death in young adults. Suicide contagion among young people has been a major concern and now there is evidence of inter-generational suicide.

How do we explain this?

Hear from a practitioner who has for the whole of his professional career worked with and sought to understand suicidal young people.

He will offer his learnings, insights and practice wisdom and provide a sociological and psycho-social analysis of the reasons why young people in such large numbers want to end their lives.

Explore what the evidence tells us are effective prevention, intervention and postvention strategies to respond to these reasons and engage in a life affirming conversation and reflect on how to apply these learnings to your work.

Workshop Description

The suicide of a young person has a devastating impact on all those connected. Depsite numerous initiatives, we have seen in rercent an increase in the rates of suicide in young people, particularly Maori. The prevention of such deaths is challenging due to the complexity of the inter-relating factors that influence suicidal behaviour in the young people. This workshop will provide an overview of these factors and what has been shown to be effective prevention and intervention strategies.

In order to prevent suicide it is essential that we have sound understanding of the phenomenological, sociological, epidemiological and pyscho-social factors that collectively impact on the lives of young people and influence their decsion to end their lives - "the science of suicide". It is this science of suicide rather than the ideological that we should based our prevention, intervention and postvention strategies. A critique will be offered of some of the more common theories informing many suicide prevention initiatives will be offered.

The workshop draws on the presenter's 35 years experience of working with suicidal young people. Heading up this country's first national response to youth suicide in the 1980's Barry has traced the epidemiological and sociological trends in youth suicides - age groupings, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and gender diversity and neurodiversity.

He has examined the changing psycho-social factors presenting in suicidal young people as well as their suicide narrative and the underlying phenomenology that underpins their suicide.

Online workshop delivery

The online workshop format for TaylorMade workshops is delivered via Zoom in modules. A one day in-person workshop is usually delivered online from two up to four modules which are held weekly. The length of each module is 3 hours.

HEAR FROM AWARD WINNING & INTERNATIONALLY RESPECTED SUICIDE PREVENTION SPECIALIST - BARRY TAYLOR

Barry has worked in mental wellbeing promotion and suicide prevention/postvention for 35 years at the local, national and international levels. His extensive experience includes sitting on state and national government advisory committees; designing, implementing and evaluating suicide prevention programs; writing suicide prevention guidelines, training packages and community resources; providing technical advice to community based and national mental wellbeing and suicide prevention programs.

He has led multiple ‘firsts’ in the context of suicide prevention and postvention both in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. He headed up the first national response to youth suicide in Aotearoa-New Zealand in the late 1980's and wrote the first postvention guidelines for schools on how to respond to a suicide in the school. In 1990 he was the recipient of a Winston Churchill Fellowship which enabled him to scope useful models in youth suicide prevention in the UK and USA. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to mental wellbeing and suicide prevention, he was awarded in 2016 the NSW Mental Health Commissioner's Community Champion Award. He currently sits on the Health and Disability Ethics Committee.

A pioneer in suicide risk assessment training in this country, Barry's insights are informed by a comprehensive and critical understanding of the research and latest thinking in both the national and international suicide prevention sector.

Drawing also on his extensive experience in engaging, assessing and supporting suicidal people from different cultures, age groups,genders and sexualities,he offers practical and time proven approaches to undertaking an effective assessment.

As a health sociologist, Barry offers an unique insight into the evolving phenomenon of suicide in the New Zealand context and the critical social and cultural determinants that have influenced it, insights that very few others trainers or training programs in this country provide. The workshop is enriched by the learnings from Barry's own lived experience of depression and suicidality and his pathway to recovery.

After a number of years overseas, Barry is living back in New Zealand and is passionate about building the knowledge base, competence and capability within our country to effectively respond to the unacceptably high rate of suicide in this country.
