Arnold Zable is an acclaimed writer, novelist, and storyteller, and the recipient of the 2021 Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature. His books include Jewels and Ashes, Wanderers and Dreamers, Café Scheherazade, Scraps of Heaven, Sea of Many Returns, The Fig Tree, Violin Lessons, The Fighter, and most recently, The Watermill. He has published numerous stories, features, essays, columns, reviews, and works for theatre, and has a doctorate from the School of Creative Arts, Melbourne University. He has lectured widely on literature and has performed as a storyteller both nationally and internationally, most recently at the Krakow Jewish Festival. He has a special interest in Yiddish language and culture and is a renowned advocate for refugees and for a harmonious multicultural Australia. His awards include the 2004 National Folk Recording Award for The Fig Tree CD, the 2013 Voltaire Prize for Freedom of Expression, the 2017 Australia Council Fellowship for Literature.
