TIdal Moon "Last Hurrah" Concert
Description
Farewell and Adieu!
After 10 plus years of professional performing and touring, Tidal Moon will be going down with the setting sun. It has been a fabulous journey with an enormous amount of happy and memorable times. We have met some amazing people, played to many wonderful audiences and enjoyed every moment; but all things have a season and so it is with us. This is an outdoors garden event, so please make sure you BYO chair and insect repellant!
All funds returned to the community!
We support community. All proceeds will be donated towards the purchase and maintenance of a proposed electric bus for the Coochiemudlo Island community. This project is managed by the Coochiemudlo Island Progress Association (CIPA) who currently run a community bus service manned by volunteers, with a conventionally powered bus.
Supported by community!
We acknowledge the provision of marquees by the CIPA to help provide shelter. The delightful Hayley Lake will be our Master of Ceremonies. Local performance poet Kate Walker will be conducting an Acknowledgement of Country and provide a poem. Elizabeth Rankin (CIPA President) will be speaking briefly about the importance and significance of the proposed electricity bus service. Local musicians Damon Riley and Ben Lewis will kick off the concert as the support act. David Nolan, the fire brigade boss on the island will be looking after sound and the PA system. We would also like to acknowledge local musicians Col Barwick (percussion) and Belinda Brown (ukulele) who will join Tidal Moon in a few songs. Thanks to Darlene Pool and Sylvia Bedford who will be greeting people at the door and look after cash sales. We are grateful to everyone who is supporting this event and particularly grateful to Carolyn Brammer for the generous use of the Mudlo property as the venue.
Tidal Moon biography
Inspired by ancient Celtic traditions, Tidal Moon's repertoire includes imaginative originals and traditional folk songs from around the world, sung in various languages such as Gaelic, Spanish, Tagalog and English. Using a variety of instruments including harp and guitar, Barbara Jeffrey and Jose Garcia forge a unique perspective on folk, using cultural perspectives from Scotland and the Philippines, plus their respective professional backgrounds. Barbara's music grounding was in education, classical music and opera; and Jose's in community music, country and bluegrass. Despite these disparate sources, their combined soprano and baritone harmonies blend together magically. Stunningly beautiful, traditional and contemporary music!
Damon & Ben biography
Damon Riley has been part of the island community for over 30 years. He played music for the Coochiemudlo markets for 20 years and many other island events. Before arriving on Coochiemudlo, Damon toured full time around the UK and Europe for five years, as keyboard player and backing vocalist for international touring cabaret band "Tuesday Blues". He also appeared on the Children's Royal Variety performance, in London back in 1982. Damon spent five years as a solo musician, travelling around Queensland and performing at pubs, clubs and RSLs, including many stints at Sea World Nara resort. Now retired from gigging, Damon focuses his music on being part of the worship team at the island's community church - Pine Ridge Chapel. Ben Lewis is a talented song-writer/composer, regularly playing every week at Pine RIdge Chapel and in the past was the lead guitarist for a the band "Breakneck Speed".
The venue - "Mudlo"
Shortly after its start in 2004, the garden home of "Mudlo" has been used as a venue to support island life in a multitude of ways. In the last twenty years, Mudlo has hosted a large number of island events, many featuring music, arts and volunteer community groups such as: Coastcare, Heritage Society, Coochiemudmudlo Artisan Collective, Coochie Choir and many, many more. Owner - Carolyn Brammer herself has acted in the roles of patron, advocate and volunteer for art, music, environmental issues and other island issues. Tidal Moon has performed there a number of times, with one of our earliest performances being a charity concert. Funds from that concert was used to support bushfire victims in the summer of 2019/2020. Residents in one of the hardest hit townships was targeted - the NSW town of Cobargo. It was a privilege to be part of a small but caring community that actively supported those impacted by disaster, outside of our own immediate watery borders, willing and able to help others - true community spirit. We have always supported such people and so it is fitting that our last concert should carry similar sentiments.
Thank you!
We just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has ever given us appreciation and encouragement in our music-making journey. It means the world to us to have people connect with us in some way. We know that many were expecting us to perform in our usual biannual tours to Victoria in March and September. So we apologise for cancelling these tours. Whether big or small, briefly or for years, we owe so much to every venue who has supported us and to every music lover who has offered a kind word and an open, appreciative ear to us. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. “So farewell, adieu, so long, vaya con Dios…” Barbara and José - Tidal Moon.
