Building Safer General Practice Through Trauma-Informed Care

gpex and WQPHN are proud to present trauma-informed de-escalation. Every day, general practice teams support people whose health, behaviour and engagement are shaped by trauma. Whether presenting as anxiety, aggression, chronic disease, repeated attendance, non-compliance or emotional distress, trauma can significantly influence how patients experience healthcare. 

Trauma-Informed De-escalation (TIDE) is an innovative, evidence-based workshop designed for General Practitioners and primary healthcare teams. Developed by Registered Nurse and educator Misty Carey, TIDE combines the latest research in trauma, neuroscience and de-escalation with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) to deliver an engaging, practical learning experience. Participants build the confidence to recognise early signs of distress, communicate more effectively and respond safely to complex patient interactions. This session has been aligned to RACGP standards - Managing Emergencies in General Practice and Prevent and Prevent and Manage Patient Aggression and Violence.

Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the session, participants will be able to: 

• Understand the impact of trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on health, behaviour and patient engagement. 

• Recognise early signs of distress and identify factors that contribute to escalation. 

• Apply trauma-informed communication strategies that build trust, reduce conflict and minimise re-traumatisation. 

• Use practical, evidence-based de-escalation techniques to improve safety for patients and staff. 

• Strengthen psychological safety, reflective practice and strategies to prevent burnout and vicarious trauma. 

• Apply trauma-informed principles through immersive AI and VR learning experiences.

Your facilitator: Misty Carey, Founder | TIDE Education & Training

Misty Carey is a Registered Nurse, educator and founder of TIDE Education & Training, an Australian organisation dedicated to creating safer healthcare workplaces through trauma-informed practice and de-escalation education.

With over 20 years of experience across emergency care, correctional health, primary healthcare, homelessness services and community nursing, Misty has seen firsthand how trauma can influence health, behaviour and healthcare outcomes. Drawing on this experience, she developed TIDE, an innovative program that combines evidence-based trauma-informed care, neuroscience, occupational violence prevention, and emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR).

Misty is passionate about improving patient care while enhancing workforce safety and wellbeing. Through her work with health services, government agencies and community organisations across Australia, she helps build psychologically safe, trauma-informed workplaces that support better outcomes for both patients and healthcare teams.
