One of the buzziest titles at the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair – with US and Italian rights sold in significant pre-empt deals to Penguin Random House New York and Feltrinelli, respectively – Tilda is Visible is a gorgeous, witty and wise novel that celebrates older women and what it takes to embrace ourselves as we age.

Like many women, Jane experienced the crushing feeling of invisibility when she entered her forties. Heads no longer turned as she walked by and she was bombarded with thoughts from her inner monologue critiquing every sign of ageing it could find. But one piece of news turned Jane’s world on its axis: Jane was told she was going blind.

After three long and arduous months of testing, Jane was relieved to find that she had been mis-diagnosed. But her perception remained forever changed. No longer did Jane look in the mirror and criticise what she saw – instead, she embraced it. The possibility of losing her vision provided Jane with incredible insight: she wanted to see herself age, and appreciate every wrinkle, skin tag and age spot while doing so. Inspired by her experience, Jane put pen to paper.

‘The process of writing Tilda is Visible was hard, but it was healing and freeing, too,’ says Jane. ‘Ultimately, it has really reinforced my desire to inspire women to see themselves through kinder eyes as they age and show them how to remain visible.’

When Tilda Finch is diagnosed with invisibility after noticing her finger has completely disappeared, she’s not overly surprised – she’s felt invisible for years. She has a good life and a successful business selling inspirational quotes on merchandise, but she’s never really recovered from her divorce. Or, if she’s honest, her childhood. Tilda’s past has taken a toll and she’s lost sight of herself. Now, with the possibility of disappearing completely, she must face the trauma of her past and rewrite the way she perceives the world – and herself.

Entertaining, hilarious and poignant, Tilda Is Visible addresses the power of our thoughts and how childhood trauma shapes our adult experience.
