This is the time when some of our favorite prehistoric creatures made their first appearances, including the saber-toothed tiger, the Shasta ground sloth, giant camels, woolly mammoths and much, much more. Join Matt Smith, paleontologist and museum curator for Petrified Forest National Park, a region with very similar geological history to Avi Kwa Ame National Monument, as he discusses the Triassic Period, which took place just before the Jurassic Period. It's a time when the first iterations of familiar animals began emerging (like lizards, turtles and early dinosaurs) alongside truly bizarre and fanciful creatures that have no modern day equivalent (like Drepanosaurus---a monkey-like lizard with a prehensile tail!).
