Timed Entry: Middle House

Middle House is a granny flat built not for a granny but for a young family living communally across two blocks with three generations.

Home to a young couple and their two kids, Middle House sits directly between both sets of grandparents, one in front and one over the back fence, with a sister and niece nearby. Three generations across four households on two adjacent suburban blocks, also supporting two small home businesses.

The owners are participating in Brisbane Open House to broaden people's idea of what a granny flat can look and feel like, and to demonstrate how living more communally with extended family can offer a genuinely good lifestyle and a more affordable path to home ownership for young families.

It is that intergenerational living thing people keep talking about. Nothing new, of course, but a skill and a privilege that feels increasingly relevant at a time when perhaps we need it most.
