ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Set in the long-abandoned third-floor wing of Flinders Street Station, Time is a nostalgic love letter to mid-century Melbourne and a tribute to one of the city’s great icons.

Created and developed across the past three years, this truly exceptional site-specific experience is Rone’s most ambitious project to date. Profoundly atmospheric, Time captures both the grand scale and character of the site and the minute detail of a period of Melbourne’s history long lost to progress.

A fictional history that transports audiences to post-WWII Melbourne, Time is inspired by an era when European migrants powered the city’s booming manufacturing industries. A vignette of mid-century working-class life and an ode to the faded yet enduring beauty of this forgotten place, Time captures the spirit of the city’s industrious past while offering glimpses of the station’s role as a once-glorious hub of work, learning and social life.

Twelve installations, each room adorned with Rone’s haunting signature murals, the artist and his team have created an immersive, multisensory installation that audiences will remember for time to come.

ABOUT RONE

Made in the limbo between creation and destruction, Rone’s work explores the synergetic relationship between beauty and decay, new and old, wanted and unwanted. Known as a street artist who paints haunting, other-wordly portraits on walls from Miami to Madrid, he has become highly regarded for his multisensory art installations that replicate bygone times in dilapidated locations.

Time is Rone’s main medium. Be it an unsolicited aerosol stencil or a multisensory immersive experience, any beauty that has been found, revealed, or created in his projects is intended to be short-lived. He first fell for the allure of ephemerality as a figurehead in Melbourne’s street-art movement in the early 2000s; the concept of creating something beautiful within the context of decay and decline is central to the experience of any graffiti artist.

These days, Rone’s work is found as often in galleries as it is on the streets. His work has been acquisitioned by esteemed institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, and has been shown by galleries in London, Berlin, and New York.
