Event description

Toby Martin: 30 year retrospective. Night one: 1995-2005

Toby Martin is a singer-songwriter based in Gadigal Land, Sydney. Over the course of nine albums, he has become well-known for his detailed, observational lyric writing and his plaintive melodic style. He is the lead singer with the band Youth Group who have won an ARIA for their cover of Forever Young and toured extensively around the world. His solo albums are often strongly imbued with a sense of place, whether Bankstown in western Sydney, or Huddersfield in northern England. He also collaborates with many musicians from different cultural backgrounds, including Gomeroi elder Uncle Roger Knox and his most recent record Two Sounds Gliding was made with Vietnamese musician Dang Lan.

It is Toby's 50th birthday this year, and also an anniversary of 30 years of music making for him. Seemed like a good time to take a view back across his back catalogue! In three special gigs over three consecutive nights, Toby will do acoustic versions of many of his recorded songs on guitar and piano at the charming Church Street Studios, Camperdown. These nights will be structured chronologically, and night two will take in the years 2005-2015, and will feature songs from Youth Group's albums Casino Twilight Dogs and The Night Is Ours plus Toby's first solo album Love's Shadow

Also playing tonight will be Jerrah Patston
