Event description

Spil'no (Together) Embroidery Masterclass

Hosted by Create for Ukraine and KX Embroidery

Create for Ukraine project unites your inner creativity with your ability to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life far across the globe. Join us for this glimpse into Ukrainian identity and folk culture through its beautiful tradition of embroidery.

Guided by the Ksenia from KX Embroidery, you will have the opportunity to create your own embroidered motif from scratch, using a mid-century design from the distinctive regional embroidery of eastern Podillia.

About the artist: Ksenia is a grandma-taught and self-taught tragic for Ukrainian embroidery. For Ksenia, embroidery is a connection to heritage and a focus on crafting truly gorgeous pieces that live up the long and rich tradition of Ukrainian embroidery. You can read about and see more of Ksenia’s embroidery at KXembroidery.

About the design: Rushnyky, ritual cloths, from eastern Podillia have an extremely distinctive style of their own amongst Ukrainian embroidery. Their designs contain images harking back to primordial culture and beliefs, classically using the technique of kachalochka, a rolling satin stitch. These figures, depicted on a wedding rushnyk, have joined hands in a circular dance at an event, which would bring a community together.

About the charity: We invite you to come together, to join hands with us in bettering the lives of communities in de-occupied territories. Proceeds from the masterclass will go to KHARPP, a charity repairing homes in towns and villages in eastern Ukraine. KHARPP adapt to the changing situation on the ground and work closely with local administrations to use donations in the most effective way possible. Please visit their website or social media pages to read about and be inspired by their work.

We are so excited and grateful to have the kind support of Space 2b Social Design for this masterclass! Space 2b is an open, grassroots organization, where newly arrived migrants and refugees and local, community-based designers can come together to exchange knowledge, ideas and skills.

This masterclass is suitable for complete beginners, for those with some experience in embroidery and for those who attended our Oberih (Amulet) masterclass and would like to further extend their skills. Places are limited to provide you with a more personal and enhanced experience. All of the required materials will be supplied.

You can sign up to receive news about future Create for Ukraine masterclasses here.
